What is breakdown cover?
Experiencing a breakdown can not only be a costly and inconvenient experience, but it can also be quite traumatic.
When you break down, whether you're on holiday or out making deliveries as a courier, you want a service that responds quickly to your circumstances, especially if you're vulnerable. That’s the role of breakdown cover. Also known as roadside assistance, breakdown cover is a type of insurance service that provides assistance and support to motorists when their vehicles experience mechanical or electrical failure, leaving them stranded on the roadside.
We work with both AXA Assistance and RAC Breakdown, and this allows us to provide our clients cover for 365 days a year, and 24 hours a day. This cover also includes the following:
- Roadside assistance
- Recovery
- Vehicles repairs at home
- Repairs following a mis-fuelling incident
- Home call
- European cover
- Local & nationwide recovery
- Car hire and / or accommodation
- Message relay
It's quick and easy to arrange breakdown cover and there’s no forms to fill in, so what are you waiting for? Call us or visit a Howden branch today and learn more about how we can help you get a hold of breakdown cover plan that suits you.

Breakdown cover FAQs
What is excess on breakdown cover?
Excess is the amount you agree to pay towards a claim before your cover takes care of the rest. Some breakdown cover policies include an excess while others do not, so it is worth checking the details to understand how it applies. Knowing your excess helps you make an informed choice about the level of protection that suits you.
Do I need breakdown cover?
Breakdown cover gives you reassurance that help is available if your vehicle stops working unexpectedly. It can save you from the stress and cost of arranging assistance on your own, especially if you travel regularly or rely on your vehicle for everyday journeys. With cover in place, you know you can get support quickly whether you are close to home or further afield.
Does breakdown cover include repairs?
Breakdown cover includes roadside assistance to help fix minor issues so you can get moving again. If the problem cannot be resolved where you are, your vehicle can be taken to a garage for further repair. The cost of the repair itself is not usually included, but the cover helps you reach the support you need quickly.
