What is Temporary Learner Driver Insurance?
If you're a novice driver practicing in a friend or family member's car instead of with a certified instructor, obtaining your insurance policy is essential. However, while you learn, you likely won't need continuous coverage. Instead, opt for a flexible temporary policy that aligns with your specific requirements.
With our short-term learner driver insurance, you'll only pay for the coverage you need during your learning journey. You have the flexibility to choose learner insurance for a day, a week, or a month. With coverage options ranging from 12 hours to 28 days, finding a policy that accommodates your schedule is practical and easy.
How does our Temporary Learner Insurance work?
Our short-term learner insurance is specifically designed for individuals learning to drive in their own vehicle or a family member's car. You have the flexibility to secure coverage for the duration that suits your needs, ensuring comprehensive protection during practice sessions in the vehicle of your choice.
As provisional license holder, it is imperative to be accompanied by a qualified and eligible individual for supervision. Our provisional insurance also guarantees that there is no impact on your No Claims Discount, preserving the unaffected status of other policies.
It's important to note that the cover provided by your temporary learner driver insurance does not persist once you have successfully passed your driving test. Nonetheless, this insurance option offers an economical solution for getting cover while honing your driving skills as a learner.
What does our Temporary Learner Insurance cover?
Comprehensive cover is included as standard with our learner driver insurance, so you're automatically covered for damage to yourself, your vehicle, or any third parties. This gives you complete peace of mind while refining your driving skills.
-
Fully comprehensive cover on policies lasting from 12 hours to 28 days.
-
Cover for accidental and malicious damage to your car.
-
Cover for injury to others or damage to their property.
-
Valid for driving anywhere in the UK.
What's not covered with temporary learner car insurance?
-
The excess amount you’ve agreed to pay.
-
Vehicle release from an impound.
-
Additional drivers – cover applies only to the named driver on the policy.
-
Standalone claims or separate cover for broken or damaged glass, including the windscreen.
-
Driving after you’ve passed your test.

Hear from our insurance expert...
What’s one thing I could do to reduce the cost of my car insurance premium?
"Adding a parent or two to your policy can significantly help reduce overall premium. Occupation categorising (how insurers group job titles and industries into risk-based categories to calculate premiums) can also create big differences, so pay close attention to how your job title is entered when getting a quote."
Michael Foord, young driver insurance expert
Temporary Learner Insurance FAQs
Can I get learner driver insurance for my own car?
Absolutely. Our flexible learner driver insurance is designed for learner drivers using either their own car (as the policyholder) or someone else's, such as a parent's car, while they practice driving.
How much does it cost to add a learner driver to an existing insurance policy?
Adding a learner driver to an existing annual policy can be costly. Because learner drivers are considered higher risk due to their lack of experience, some insurers may not even allow them to be added.
If they do, it could lead to a higher premium and an admin fee for updating the policy. There’s also the risk of the vehicle owner losing their no claims discount if the learner has an accident, which could result in expensive repairs and a long-term increase in the owner's insurance costs.
Separate learner driver policies offer a smart alternative. As a standalone policy lasting from 12 hours to 28 days, it won’t affect any existing no claims discount. This gives learners the flexibility to get private practice in a friend or family member’s car, without impacting their own policy.
What will happen to my learner driver insurance policy once I've passed my driving test?
After you pass your test, your learner driver policy expires and will no longer be valid, even for leaving the test centre. You'll need to either get temporary car insurance, or take out an annual policy.
What is the cheapest way to insure a learner driver?
The cheapest way to insure a learner driver depends on how often they plan to drive and whose car they’ll be using. If the learner is only practising occasionally in another person's car, like a friend or family member’s, temporary learner driver insurance is often the cheapest and most flexible option.
Alternatively, if the learner driver has their own car and plans to drive regularly, an annual learner driver policy might work out cheaper in the long run.
Can someone else drive my car on learner insurance?
No, learner driver insurance only covers the named learner driver on the policy. It does not extend to other drivers, even if they’re supervising the learner. If someone else needs to drive the car, they must be insured separately.
What's the cheapest car to insure for a learner?
Manual cars in lower insurance groups tend to be the cheapest to insure for learner drivers. Look for cars with small engines, good safety ratings, and low repair costs, which are all factors that insurers consider when setting premiums.
Do you need L plates for provisional insurance?
Yes, L plates are legally required for all learner drivers while they practice. Failing to display L plates on your car could also result in your learner driver insurance policy being voided.
