How does Named Young Driver Insurance work?
Designed for young drivers aged 17-27 this innovative insurance, courtesy of the car insurance specialists at Marmalade, presents a unique way for a young driver to get insured on a parent’s car.
The named young driver insurance we offer uses black box technology to help young drivers develop safe driving skills and enables them to start earning their own no claims discount (NCD). This is also an annual policy which runs alongside the parents’ car insurance that only covers the young driver when they are behind the wheel.
The black box, or telematics device, will monitor your driving style by measuring:
-
Acceleration
-
Braking
-
Cornering
-
Speed
-
Mobile phone usage
-
Location and distance driven
-
Crash detection
So, if you drive safely and maintain a good driving score, you'll be rewarded with a personalised premium when it's time for renewal.
Just so you’re aware, this black box insurance cover is only suitable for:
- Driving a parent's or grandparent's car
- Provisional and full licence holders
- Young drivers aged 17 – 27
This cover is not suitable for:
-
Insuring a young driver's own car
-
Vans or commercial vehicles

Hear from our insurance expert...
What’s one thing I should definitely consider before opting for a named young driver insurance policy?
"Think about who will be the main user and also who is will the registered owner of the vehicle. Also, unlike our named young driver insurance, with many insurers you won't generally be building up a no claims bonus."
Michael Foord, young driver insurance expert
Named Young Driver Insurance FAQs
How does the black box determine who's driving the car?
Over time, the telematics tag and app will start to recognise different driving behaviours, automatically assigning trips to either the policyholder or named drivers. If a journey is incorrectly assigned, you can easily re-assign it within the app. Please note that falsely re-assigning trips could lead to your policy being cancelled.
To make sure your phone pairs properly with the telematics tag, Bluetooth must be switched on and your battery should be at least 10% charged throughout the journey.
Can a 17 year old be a named driver?
Absolutely - this named young driver insurance policy is designed for young drivers aged 17-27, including both provisional driving licence and full driving licence holders.
Will I be covered after I pass my driving test?
Yes! This annual policy covers you as a learner on a parent’s car and continues seamlessly once you’ve passed, with no extra cost as your premium will remain exactly the same.
Is it cheaper to get insured on a parent's car?
This depends on your individual circumstances, but in many cases it can be cheaper to get insured on a parent's car. Plus, with this policy, young drivers can start building their own NCD which can save money in the long run.
Will Named Young Driver Insurance cover the main driver of the car?
No, this policy is designed for young drivers who borrow a parent’s car and who are driving less than 50% of the total trips of the car. It’s not suitable if you’re the car’s primary driver.
