How does American and import car insurance work?

Any car used on UK public roads needs to be insured, and there aren’t any exceptions for imported cars either. With imported cars as well, whether they’re American, European or brought in from anywhere else in the world, it’s often trickier to find the right insurance for these cars compared to finding insurance for cars built in the UK.
