Government launches major employment drive: what it means for your business
1 minute
On 16 March 2026, the UK Government unveiled a nationwide employment initiative designed to unlock 200,000 new jobs and apprenticeships for young people across the UK. For business leaders, this represents a powerful opportunity to develop new talent and strengthen workforce capability.
We believe people are at the heart of every successful organisation. Below, we break down what the announcement means, how the UK Government’s new jobs and apprenticeship incentives support businesses, and how your business can get involved.
A national push to build skills for the future
The Government’s new initiative brings together employers, training providers and public bodies to deliver more accessible routes into skilled work. Its focus is on supporting young people into meaningful employment while ensuring businesses can access the talent they need. What are the Government’s new jobs and apprenticeship incentives?
- For businesses hiring people aged 18-24, who have been on Universal Credit and looking for work for six months, will receive £3,000 through the new Youth Jobs Grant.
- The Government expanded the Jobs Guarantee to a wider range, from 18-21 to 18-24, to create an additional 35,000 extra subsided jobs.
- SME businesses can access £2,000 for each new employee aged 16-24 through the Apprenticeship Incentive
In an environment where skills shortages continue to challenge many sectors, the new jobs and apprenticeships incentives offer practical support to businesses.
1. Access to a talent pipeline
Businesses can connect with young people entering the workforce. Providing apprenticeship placements gives your business the opportunity to shape skills needed to support growth.
2. Funding to support recruitment and training
The Government’s plans to offer financial incentives to support employers in creating new roles can reduce the upfront cost of training and onboarding, especially for small and medium‑sized businesses.
3. Improved workforce retention
Apprenticeship pathways have been proven to increase loyalty, engagement and progression opportunities.
