The UK’s most stolen cars: is yours a top target?

2 minutes

Key takeaways

  • The Nissan Juke is now the UK's most stolen vehicle. It overtook the Toyota C-HR, while several Ford Fiesta variants remain frequent targets.

  • London and the West Midlands remain theft hotspots. Together, they account for around half of all recorded vehicle thefts.

  • Recovery rates are worryingly low. Fewer than 15% of stolen vehicles are ever recovered, making prevention more important than ever.

More than 25,000 vehicles were reported stolen in the UK during the first half of 2026. That's 138 thefts every day, or one vehicle stolen every 10 minutes. The good news? Car theft is down compared to 2025 – nearly 28,000 were stolen from January-June of last year. However, thieves are constantly changing their tactics, with popular crossovers, hybrids and electric vehicles now firmly in their sights.

The UK’s most stolen car

According to DVLA data, the Nissan Juke Tekna CVT was the UK's most stolen vehicle variant during the first six months of 2026. That's right, it's no longer the Range Rover. There were 197 thefts recorded, a 19% increase compared to the same period last year. The Toyota C-HR Dynamic HEV, which topped the rankings in 2025, slipped into second place with 160 thefts.

Most Stolen Cars 2026

The figures suggest criminals are increasingly targeting modern crossovers and vehicles equipped with keyless entry technology. Several EVs featured among the UK's most stolen vehicles, including:

  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate EV

  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 Premium EV

  • Kia Niro 2 EV

  • Kia Niro 4 EV

The worst areas for car theft in the UK

Where you live can have a significant impact on your risk. The Metropolitan Police Service recorded more than 114,000 vehicle thefts since 2022, making it the UK's largest hotspot by some distance. West Midlands Police ranked second. Within London, Croydon, Waltham Forest and Newham recorded some of the highest levels of vehicle crime.

By comparison, rural areas such as Cumbria, North Wales and Wiltshire reported far lower theft numbers.

Can you recover a stolen vehicle?

Perhaps the most alarming finding is what happens after a vehicle is stolen. Between 2022 and 2025, just 13.35% of stolen vehicles were recovered. In other words, nearly nine out of ten stolen vehicles were never returned to their owners. Recovery rates vary dramatically across the country. The best-performing areas include:

  1. Staffordshire Police (49.9%)

  2. Leicestershire Police (44.1%)

  3. Northamptonshire Police (42.5%)

  4. South Yorkshire Police (38.7%)

  5. West Yorkshire Police (37.2%)

While recovery rates are stronger in these regions, taking steps to prevent theft is often far more effective than hoping for recovery.

How to deter car thieves

Relay attacks are one of the most common ways modern cars are stolen. Criminals use electronic devices to capture and boost the signal from a keyless car key inside your home. One thief stands near the vehicle while another stands close to your front door or window, allowing them to trick the car into thinking the key is nearby. The vehicle can then be unlocked and driven away in seconds, often without any visible signs of forced entry.

Cars with keyless entry and push-button start systems are the most common targets, which is why security experts recommend storing keys in a Faraday pouch or metal-lined box when they're not being used. So, if you want to stay one step ahead of thieves, these measures can reduce your risk:

  1. Store keyless car keys in a Faraday pouch to block relay theft attacks.

  2. When at home, keep your keys away from the front door/driveway.

  3. Park in well-lit areas whenever possible.

  4. Use a steering wheel lock or wheel clamp.

  5. Keep vehicle software and connected apps up to date.

  6. Avoid leaving valuables visible inside your car.

  7. Always double-check your car is locked before walking away.

  8. Stay informed about theft trends affecting your area.
