Social media insurance gurus: can you trust their money-saving hacks?

3 minutes

We've seen a growing number of social media insurance gurus selling downloadable ‘tips and tricks’ guides from £10 to £80 that promise cheaper car insurance. So, we bought one to investigate how legitimate they are. Here's what we found.

Key takeaways

  • Social media insurance gurus often sell impersonal advice that's already freely available online.

  • Some ‘hacks’ could mean you risk providing inaccurate information to insurers. And getting key details wrong could affect a future claim.

  • An independent broker can compare policies, explain cover and search for competitive prices without selling you ’tips and tricks’ in a digital guide.

Maybe you're shopping for a new car as the latest registration plates arrive. Or perhaps you're adding another driver or vehicle to your household.

If you've spent any time on TikTok or Instagram recently, you've probably seen the rise of the social media insurance guru. They promise to reveal "little-known secrets", "legal hacks" and "guaranteed savings" if you buy their guide. So, we bought one. And here’s what we found.

What’s the issue with social media “insurance gurus”?

Many creators post side-by-side comparison quotes, showing dramatic savings after applying their methods. At first glance, they can look convincing.

But here’s the thing: nothing in the guide wasn't already available in the public domain.

Don’t waste your money! Use a professional, reputable broker like Howden instead to help you find suitable cover, explain the small print and do the legwork for you too.

1. You don’t need to pay for a guide

They thrive on pressure tactics: “only two left”, or “prices increasing soon”. But these are meaningless and designed to create urgency.

Many of these guides package together information that's already available through insurers, brokers and consumer websites.

After paying for the guide, you'll still need to spend hours entering your details across multiple comparison sites and providers. A broker can do much of that work for you while helping you understand the differences between policies, not just the price.

2. Cheap insurance isn’t worth much if it doesn’t protect you

This is where things can become more serious.

Some social media tips focus on changing policy details to reduce premiums. While certain factors do affect price, it's important that every piece of information you provide is accurate. Take your occupation, for example. Your job can affect your premium because insurers use it to assess risk. But getting too creative with your job title could leave you misrepresenting your circumstances.

If an insurer believes information has been inaccurately provided, it could impact how a future claim is handled. You could even find yourself in legal trouble. And that's potentially an expensive gamble. According to the Association of British Insurers, motor insurers paid out a record £3.2 billion in claims during Q2 2026, with the average claim reaching £4,900. Having the right cover in place matters when significant sums are involved.

3. The reality of reviews

Many of these social media insurance ‘gurus’ showcase glowing reviews from previous customers. But are those reviews independently verified? It's worth looking for feedback hosted on recognised third-party platforms, such as Trustpilot, where reviews can be assessed more objectively.

You may also notice some creators delaying the big reveal during livestreams, encouraging comments and shares while audiences wait for the promised secret. That's because engagement helps social media algorithms push content to more people. Great for visibility. Less useful if you're looking for straightforward answers.

We don't gatekeep our advice.

Choose your vehicle carefully

Insurance costs vary depending on the vehicle. Before buying, especially for a younger or newer driver, check its insurance group and get indicative quotes.

Review your policy details

Accurate mileage, the correct vehicle value and the right class of use can all help ensure you're getting an appropriate price.

Consider adding a named driver

Adding a more experienced driver can sometimes reduce premiums, depending on your circumstances.

Shop around early

Don't leave your renewal until the last minute. Starting your search earlier can often give you more options.

Review your voluntary excess

A higher voluntary excess may reduce your premium. Just make sure it's still affordable if you need to make a claim. You can also add excess protection to your policy, meaning you'll get that sum returned to you if you did claim.

Protect your No Claims Bonus

If you've built up several years of No Claims Bonus, protecting it could be worth considering.

Howden: helpful insurance people
