The ultimate camping packing list

Camping is about getting back to basics. But with the right kit, it can also feel surprisingly comfortable. And luckily, a lot of modern gear is inflatable or multi-use, so you can pack more into a smaller space without overloading the van or car. Maybe you’re a seasoned camping pro looking to enhance your trips, or maybe you’re planning your very first adventure and wondering what to take.

If you’re in the latter camp, a good place to start is to think through a typical day and night at home. When you go to bed, you’ll need something comfortable to sleep on, a duvet or sleeping bag, a pillow, and probably a spare blanket (because it’s often colder than you expect). When you wake up, what’s for breakfast? How are you preparing it? And what are you eating and drinking from? Once you’ve got the basics, it’s time to think about the rest of your set up.

Your accommodation

If you’re staying in a caravan or campervan, you’re sorted. But there are other options too. There’s a huge range of tents available, so visit as many camping retailers as possible to get a feel for size, layout and usability before you buy. The packed-away size matters just as much as the set-up size, so think about where you’ll store it and how you’ll dry it if you have to pack away in the rain. Even a small amount of moisture can cause mould.

If you can, borrow a tent for your first trip. You could even try a low-key glamping option where you arrive to a tent already set up, it doesn’t have to be fancy. It’s a good test to work out whether camping is right for you, before you invest in a tent.

Other considerations:

• Blow-up (air) tents vs pole tents: always practise putting it up before you go.

• Roof tents or tailgate awning tents: these might be more pricy, but are a practical solution.

• Windbreaks:a classic striped windbreak isn’t just nostalgic, but adds shelter and a bit of privacy.

• Your sleeping set-up: car camping mattresses are ideal for festivals or sleeping in your vehicle. Blow-up bed bases and self-inflating mattresses are a great combination of comfort and practicality.

• Layer up: always bring extra blankets, even in summer. Better to have the option to get warmer than stay cold.

Washing and hygiene

Comfort isn’t just about sleeping. It’s also the daily ablutions. Pop-up showers are a handy camping accessory. Add slightly cooled boiled water, use a good nozzle, and suddenly you’ve got a proper wash, even on colder days. You don’t have to rely on the sun to heat your water. Pair with a shower tent for privacy and microfibre towels, which are quick-drying, compact and far easier to pack. Not everyone wants a midnight walk to the campsite facilities, especially if you’re on a large campsite or you’ve got young children. Portable toilets range from simple bucket designs to cassette systems. With proper cleaning and usage, they shouldn’t smell – even if kept in your tent.

Cooking and food

Keep it simple to start with. Start basic, then build up your kit based on what you actually use. Two-ring stoves are a great option – they come in electric, if you have a hook-up, or butane gas versions which can be a good alternative to a BBQ if your site doesn’t allow them. Gas grills, such as a Cadac, are a flexible option with accessories to expand what you can cook.

A traditional kettle will do the job, but you’ll need a camping version if you’re off-grid. Jetboil systems are compact and fast camping stoves,  or a simple camping kettle on a gas ring will work just as well. Ideal when you just need a quick cup of tea You can pre-prepare meals and freeze them at home, ready to cook at your pitch. Once you’ve planned your meals for the trip, think about storage. An electric coolbox comes in handy, especially if you get one with wheels and handles, making it easy to move.

Lighting and power

Campsites can get very dark at night, and you don’t want to be stumbling around trying to find your tent. Make sure to pack solar or rechargeable lanterns and torches, or extra batteries. String lights or roll-up fairy lights also make your pitch feel more homely, and a flagpole or marker can help you find your tent on larger sites. Portable power stations or solar charging units, such as Jackery-style systems are ideal for phones, lights and small electrical items when you’re off-grid for a few days.

It’s always worth taking the old ‘tried and tested’ battery operated torches and lanterns as well, with spare batteries. Tip: Buy an inexpensive head torch for those midnight trips to the toilets!

More camping tips

It’s not just what you pack, it’s how you pack. Create grab bags or boxes grouped by use:

• Toiletry/medical bag (with reusable travel bottles)

• Kitchen essentials (cutlery, dinnerware, pans, mugs

• Cold/wet weather extras (hats, gloves, waterproofs)

Remember, you don’t need to go all in straight away. Start with the basics, camp a few times, then upgrade based on what you actually need. Shop around and visit places like Go Outdoors and Decathlon. They often have full displays so you can compare size, comfort and budget, which is especially useful for items like chairs or tents.
