An El Niño Summer: what it could mean for you
3 minutes
As we enjoy the warmer months, scientists are keeping a close eye on a global weather pattern known as El Niño. You may have heard this term pop up on the news recently and wondered what it meant.
You may have also considered what that means for your home, and possibly your insurance. In short: more extreme weather can put extra pressure on your property, from heat-related damage like subsidence to storms and flooding later in the year. And that’s where the right cover really matters…
Why El Niño matters
In simple terms, El Niño is a natural climate cycle that occurs every few years. It leads to higher global temperatures and can disrupt usual weather patterns. This time, experts believe it could be a particularly strong event. With temperatures soaring to 40 degrees, even back in June, evidence certainly suggests that’s the case. Around the world, El Niño can bring far more extreme weather than we see in the UK. Some global regions may experience prolonged heat and drought, while others see heavier rainfall and an increased risk of flooding or wildfires. These shifting patterns can still affect our Great British weather. For example, teamed with record-breaking heatwaves, some forecasts suggest we may see more unsettled conditions later in the year, with the possibility of a colder winter.
More importantly for homeowners, warmer and drier summers linked to changing climate patterns are already having an impact. According to the Met Office: “predictions have been signalling for some time that this latest El Niño is likely to be a significant event, perhaps one of the most intense on record, with the potential to bring severe impacts to a number of regions of the world as the event unfolds.”
You may be surprised to know that El Niño occurs every few years (between two to seven years on average)! It can last for up to 12 months, with the shift in global weather patterns leading to unstable weather in the UK. In fact, there are other predictions that 2026’s El Niño could beat records going back to 1950. While feeling too hot or too cold can be difficult to manage, or even a medical emergency, given our homes are built for the cold British weather, there are also structural issues that homeowners could face which you may not have considered before.
A growing concern closer to home: subsidence
One of the key risks associated with prolonged dry weather is subsidence. Subsidence happens when the ground beneath a property dries out and shrinks, causing the building’s foundations to shift. This can lead to cracks in walls, uneven floors, and, in more serious cases, structural damage. Certain parts of the UK (particularly areas with clay-rich soil such as London, Essex and Kent) are more vulnerable. However, it can occur anywhere under the right conditions. Recent figures show that thousands of UK homeowners have already been affected, with repair costs often running into the tens of thousands of pounds. As summers become hotter and drier, the risk is expected to increase. So, what can you do to protect yourself, and your home?
What signs should you look for?
It’s important to spot potential issues early. Some common signs of subsidence include:
New cracks in walls, especially around doors and windows
Cracks that are wider at the top than the bottom
Doors or windows sticking or not closing properly
Rippling wallpaper that wasn’t there before
If you notice any of these signs, it’s best to act sooner rather than later.

What to do if you’re concerned
If you suspect subsidence, contact your insurer as soon as possible. They can arrange for a professional assessment and guide you through the next steps. In many cases, it could be the problem can be managed by addressing the underlying cause, such as controlling nearby tree growth or restoring moisture levels in the soil. More serious cases may require structural work, but these are less common. It’s worth noting that subsidence claims can take time to resolve, as properties are often monitored over several months to assess movement.
