From Birkins to Vintage Chanel: are your handbags properly insured?
3 minutes
Are you dreaming of that Chanel Classic Flap, Louis Vuitton Speedy or maybe even the epitome of luxury, a Hermés Birkin? Whether you’re treating yourself of gifting someone special, there’s one thing that is often overlooked: insurance.
Luxury handbags are no longer simply fashion accessories. Many have become highly collectible assets, with vintage, limited-edition and discontinued pieces attracting growing interest from collectors and fashion enthusiasts alike. The recent trend of "Birkinification", inspired by Jane Birkin's famously personalised handbags, has fuelled renewed appreciation for vintage bags and the stories behind them, further increasing demand for sought-after pieces on the secondary market.
These aren’t just handbags, some are works of art and they can be serious investments, so it’s important to ensure you’ve got the right cover in place.
Can you replace it on the new market?
If you lose your Chanel or Louis Vuitton, you can pop into a boutique or order online. However, if you wish to replace your Hermés bag it will be more difficult. The Hermès Kelly and Birkin are among the most desired handbags in the world, making them excellent investments and highly collectible items. Due to the meticulous craftsmanship and use of rare materials and leathers, Hermès produces a limited number of bags each year. You will therefore not be able to walk into Hermés and request a replacement as easily and so may need to turn to the secondary market instead.
Secondary Market Values
As the number of Hermés bags produced is limited and availability on the secondary market is immediate, the demand and consequently the values can be higher than original retail prices.
If you need to turn to the secondary market to replace a Birkin or Kelly following a loss, you may need to source it through a specialist dealer or auction house rather than directly from Hermès. The cost of replacement may be substantially higher than the amount originally paid, particularly where scarcity, provenance or condition drive demand. Your arrangements should reflect the true cost of replacement rather than the original purchase price.
The same applies to other luxury brands. Vintage Chanel, limited-edition Louis Vuitton collaborations and discontinued styles can all command premiums on the secondary market, particularly where condition, rarity and provenance increase desirability.
If you’re lucky enough to own a custom or special-order handbag then the value could be even higher!
Assessing the value can be tricky so we always recommend obtaining an independent professional valuation.
Why professional valuations matter
Many clients assume a purchase receipt is enough to demonstrate value. However, while receipts provide evidence of what was paid at the time of purchase, they rarely reflect current market values, especially for items that have appreciated or become increasingly scarce.
A professional valuation helps establish an accurate replacement cost and provides insurers with the information needed to understand exactly when it being insured. This becomes particularly important for luxury handbags, jewellery and watches, where market values can change significantly over time and secondary market prices may differ considerably from original retail prices. Valuations should be reviewed periodically to ensure they remain current, particularly where market demand or retail prices have increased.
A robust valuation should clearly identify the item, include photographs and provide sufficient detail to support replacement or reproduction if a claim is made. Keeping valuations up to date can also help avoid the risk of underinsurance and assist in achieving a smoother claims process if the worst should happen.

What about your existing handbags?
Luxury brands frequently increase their retail prices. For example, Doerr Valuations has reported that the Chanel Medium Classic Flap increased from approximately $4,900 in 2012 to $10,800 in 2024.1
Add in the growing popularity of vintage handbags and trends such as "Birkinification", which have sparked a renewed interest in iconic and heritage designs, and it's easy to see why regular reviews of your insurance arrangements are so important.
So, if you haven’t reviewed your sums insured recently, now’s the time to do it.
How can Howden help?
Many of the insurers we work with will cover designer bags under the contents section of a home insurance policy, meaning they may not need to be individually specified. However, a particularly valuable, custom or special-order handbag may require a different approach.
As a specialist Private Client broker, we work with a panel of insurers and can help ensure your cover is structured appropriately for the items you own. We can put you in touch with professional valuers, review existing sums insured and identify any policy conditions or limits that may be relevant to your collection.
Some insurers all offer enhanced protection for high-value handbags, including features such as:
Uplift in Sum Insured if professional valued in the last 3 years
Loss in Value Cover if your bag is damaged and then repaired
Worldwide protection when travelling
