Home or Away? A guide to storing jewellery and watches
4 minutes
When it comes to protecting valuable jewellery and watches, many clients default to the idea of a home safe.
However, bank and private vault facilities can also be considered. Each option offers a different mix of accessibility, security and risk, and the most appropriate solution will ultimately depend on your lifestyle, how often you wear your items, and your personal tolerance for risk.
Home Safes
Home safes are the most common way to store jewellery, watches, and important documents. When professionally specified and installed, they can offer an excellent level of protection - particularly when integrated with an intruder alarm.
Key advantages
- Immediate access. Provided it hasn’t been installed in an inconvenient location, such as a basement, your valuables are accessible when you need them - and just as importantly, easy to return after an evening out.
- Flexible specification. Home safes are available a wide range of grades and sizes. Smaller safes can be installed in many areas of the home, while bespoke solutions can be created to suit specific requirements. Our trusted partners at Insafe and TSI Security can deliver and install safes tailored to your requirements, including custom sizing, design, internal layout, lock mechanisms and finishes.
- Integration with your home security. Home safes should be installed within an alarmed area as part of a layered security approach. Some systems can also incorporate additional features such as vibration (seismic) detection, access logs and in some cases, GPS tracking if it’s stolen.
- Privacy and control. You have full control over your assets, with no reliance on any third parties or restricted access hours.
Key disadvantages
- Exposure to theft. Even the most well-installed safe can be vulnerable to determined or professional burglars, particularly if not protected by a monitored alarm system with police response.
- Specification and installation risk. It’s essential to seek specialist advice and ensure installation is carried out by a professional safe company, rather than a general builder or contractor. An incorrectly specified or installed safe may actually increase your risk rather than reduce it - given that a high value of jewellery and watches are in one small box. You can read more in our article: Safety First – Top tips for your home safe.
- Coercion Risk. Unlike an off-site facility, a home safe offers limited protection against coercion, where an individual is forced to open it. Some higher-specification safes can include duress codes to help mitigate this risk, but this is not a standard feature.
Bank deposit boxes and private vaults
While fewer banks now offer safe deposit boxes, reflecting the reduction in high street branches, there are still options available, alongside specialist private vault facilities such as UltraVault by Malca-Amit.
Key advantages
- Higher levels of security. Dedicated value facilities typically benefit from 24/7 monitoring, controlled access procedures, monitored CCTV coverage and, in many cases, an on-site security presence. As a result, security standards will often exceed those found at private residences. As UltraVault notes: “Purpose-built private vault facilities are designed specifically for high-value assets, combining advanced surveillance systems, controlled access protocols and specialist handling expertise to provide a level of protection that goes beyond what is typically achievable in a residential setting.”
- Potential for lower insurance premiums. The enhanced security and reduced exposure to risk can result in lower insurance premiums compared to valuables stored at home – particularly when compared to standard “worldwide” cover for jewellery and watches.
- Reduced exposure to home burglary. By removing high-value items from the home entirely, you both reduce the potential loss in the event of a burglary and the overall attractiveness of your property to thieves.
- Suitable for rarely worn items. Vault storage is well suited to inherited pieces, collections and items that are not worn regularly.
- Cost effectiveness. While there is an annual fee, this can compare favourably with the upfront cost of purchasing and installing a high-specification safe.
Things to consider
- Practicality and travel. Unless you live close to a facility, accessing your items may require a dedicated journey. There is also a degree of exposure when transporting valuables to and from the safe. However, some specialist providers are beginning to address this through secure collection and transport services, reducing the need for clients to move items themselves.
- Limited accessibility. Access is typically restricted to the facility’s opening hours, which can reduce spontaneity - for example deciding to wear a particular piece at short notice. However, newer models are beginning to address this balance between security and convenience. As UltraVault explains, “Our portable safe deposit service allows clients to access their valuables without relinquishing control, with a safe deposit box delivered to a home, office or hotel at a pre-arranged time. This approach combines the security of off-site storage with a level of flexibility that has traditionally been difficult to achieve.” While still relatively niche within the UK market, this reflects a growing demand for solutions that offer both high-security storage and greater accessibility.
Looking beyond storage
Whether or not your insurer requires a home safe, or you choose to use a safe deposit box, both should be considered as part of a broader approach to reducing risk – and in some cases managing home insurance premiums.
Protecting jewellery is not simply about securing individual items, it’s about building resilience against a range of risks, from opportunistic theft through to more sophisticated targeting.
Taking advice from a specialist security provider, alongside guidance from an experienced insurance broker, can help ensure your valuables remain both protected and accessible - without compromising on convenience or peace of mind.
How Howden can help
Deciding where and how to store valuable jewellery and watches isn’t a standalone decision. It sits within a wider conversation about risk, lifestyle and insurance requirements.
We work with clients to take a joined-up approach - ensuring that protection measures are both effective and practical. This may include:
- Helping you understand insurer requirements, appropriate safe grades and how these align with the value and type of items you own (see our guide on safe grades)
- Identifying gaps in protection, from safe installations to alarm systems through to how items are currently stored
- Discussing when a bank deposit box or private vault may be appropriate, particularly for high-value or infrequently worn pieces.
- Ensuring your security arrangements meet your insurer’s requirements.
