Lights, Camera, Action: Managing risk and insurance for on-site shoots

1 minute

Allowing film crews into your home or estate can be exciting, but it also introduces risks that need careful management. From fire hazards caused by lighting and electrical equipment to liability and security concerns, these factors can impact your insurance. We regularly advise clients on best practices when granting third-party access to their properties, helping ensure insurer requirements are met while protecting homes and valuables.

Fire safety on set

  • Film crews often require significant electricity which can strain existing systems. We recommend that film crews bring their own generators for power.
  • Avoid using of candles. If they are essential for a scene, keep them away from high value art work and combustible materials such as curtains or cushions. Ensure candles are extinguished carefully and removed from the premises at the end of each day.
  • Film lights generate a lot of heat, so position them away from combustible materials.
  • Arrange a fire risk where possible.
  • Have a strict no smoking policy throughout the property.

Liability matters

  • Confirm that the film crew and associated contractors carry adequate liability insurance – at least £5 million
  • Agree in advance on how any damage will be repaired and who will cover the costs.
  • Clearly define responsibility for health and safety

Securing your home and privacy

  • Put a non-disclosure agreement in place with the film crew and all associated contractors.
  • Create an inventory of valuables in filming areas, couples with photographs.
  • Remove and securely secure small valuables that are not required for filming.
  • For interviews, consider using a location away from the premises.
  • Consider restricting access to just a few rooms. Use signage and mark off limits areas.
  • Asses if filming could reveal your security arrangements
  • For magazine shoots, be wary of demonstrating your wealth and location and making yourself a target for thieves.
  • Request the removal of location details from credits where possible.
  • Implement a sign-in/sign-out system for all film crew and contractors.
  • Consider additional security measures: zoning alarms, appointing security for filming areas and avoiding leaving film crew unattended.

Terrorism

There is generally no increased terrorism risk unless the filming or shoot involves political or religious themes.
